Headstrong Hallie is a full color hard cover picture book-biography about the first female US Forest Service employee to work out of an office setting, in an isolated outdoor "field" position staffing a mountaintop fire lookout. It was 1913 when Hallie packed up her horse, grabbed a gun and headed up the trail to Eddy Gulch Lookout in far northern California's Salmon River country. The men didn't think she would last, but Hallie stayed for 15 years. She paved the way for other women to work outdoors in traditionally "male" occupations. The 36 page book includes back matter with notes on Hallie's life. As author Aimee Bissonette says, "She opened the door for others and lived life on her own terms."
